Brief History

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the oldest fraternity for men in music.  Sinfonia is located on over 225 campuses across the United States.  The fraternity membership is made up of men from every major, profession, and calling.  Province One is comprised of six chapters, one  alumni association, and one colony, covering the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, along with New York City, and Long Island.

Sinfonia was founded here in Province One on October 6, 1898 at the New England Conservatory of Music.  Ossian Mills, the Conservatory’s bursar, sought to develop an Order for men of music.

Its purpose is not only to bring men together as friends, but also to provide a network of brothers with whom men can commune and renew their zeal — a support network that helps the individual to meet the challenges that face him in his daily life.
